The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) organization (org) announced today that it has entered into an agreement with DENIC Services GmbH & Co. KG (DENIC) as the sole ICANN-designated agent for Registrar Data Escrow (RDE) services.

ICANN org selected DENIC through a competitive Request for Proposal initiated in March 2023, in accordance with ICANN org’s procurement best practices to ensure services are sourced with the correct specifications, at the appropriate level of quality, and for appropriate value. DENIC has been an ICANN-designated RDE agent for over five years and has expanded its data storage locations to North America to scale and service ICANN’s registrar base globally.

NCC Group Software Resilience (NA) LLC (formerly Iron Mountain’s Intellectual Property Management division) will no longer be accepting new registrars with immediate effect and will no longer provide RDE services starting 1 November 2024.

Background

The 2013 Registrar Accreditation Agreement requires ICANN-accredited registrars to regularly deposit generic top-level domain registration data with either an ICANN-designated RDE agent (at no charge to the registrar) or an ICANN-approved RDE agent (at the registrar’s expense).

The RDE program is an integral component of ICANN’s commitment to ensuring the security and stability of the Internet and allows for an increased level of business continuity and registrant protection. Refer to the RDE Program page for more information.
